Directions to Westridge School:

If traveling east on Hwy 58 turn left to Westfir onto Westfir Road, across from the Middle Fork Ranger Station, just past milepost 31 (green background sign for Huckleberry Flats OHV area precedes the turn). Continue O.2 miles on Westfir Road to first left turn into parking lot of Westridge School. You’re there!
If traveling west on Hwy 58 drive through the town of Oakridge. Turn right to Westfir onto Westfir Road, across from the Middle Fork Ranger Station, past milepost 32 (green background sign for Huckleberry Flats OHV area precedes the turn). Continue 0.2 miles on Westfir Road to first left turn into parking lot of Westfir School. You’re there!

Course, maps, and course marking

The course is marked. Follow the ORANGE & BLACK striped ribbon, and KONA directional arrows. If there are multiple strips of ribbon hanging on one side or the other of a road/and or trail it means you are going to be turning that direction at the intersection (there will also be follow up ribbon after the turn). There are also ORANGE & WHITE KONA directional arrows to follow; international course marking standards apply. Do not go where the FLUORESCENT PINK ribbon is. The FLUORESCENT PINK ribbon indicates you are going the wrong way or Danger Ahead! RED X also indicates you are going the wrong way! Come and pre-ride the course. Please be careful, and be careful not to skid. “It’s about the trails and community.” The trails are buff right now! Maps and GPS data can be found via link from CCP site on-line at TopoFusion.com http://www.topofusion.com/, (Printable 2009 course map with profile and directions in a PDF): http://www.topofusion.com/maps/2009_CCP_11x17_v1.pdf, and (Aerial view map): http://www.topofusion.com/maps/CCP09_aerial.jpg, and (3D map): http://www.topofusion.com/maps/CCP09_3d.jpg. The course route will also be posted at the school on Friday.

KONA directional arrows are being used for course marking and hazard warning:
One arrow pointed up means: this is the course direction.
One arrow pointed down means slow down, pay attention, there's something coming up (e.g. turn, or technical section). An arrow pointed down is frequently placed with a second arrow indicating direction of turn (e.g. switchback, or intersection).
Two arrows pointed down means slow way down there is a possible hazard ahead, you could get hurt if you fall! Also, two arrows pointing down may indicate a very tight turn that needs to be taken slowly.
Three arrows pointing down means slow way down (control your speed and bike)! There is an extreme hazard ahead! If you fall there you will probably be hurt very badly, or you may die. Also, triple arrows pointing down markings are frequently accompanied by a lot of florescent Pink ribbons. If you see a lot of florescent Pink ribbons you should control your speed and bike. There are very few triple arrow down markings on the course.

You can pick up any last minute supplies at the Willamette Mountain Mercantile http://www.mtnmercantile.com/, a sponsor of the CCP (It’s a mountain bike shop, among other things). The shop is located at 48080 Hwy 58; Oakridge, Oregon. Shop phone: (541) 782-1800. The Willamette Mountain Mercantile located across the street from Ray’s, the only grocery store in Oakridge, by the only traffic light in town. You can also pick up maps of the local area at the mercantile. I recommend the USDA Forest Service, Willamette National Forest, (Oregon) Middle Fork Ranger District map. I will also have these maps available for purchase at registration for $5.00.

Cascade Cream Puff, LLC

Operating Plan #1, June/July 2009

We plan to have HAM Radios at all Aid Stations throughout the entire day for safety and communication! Portable generators may be used at all Aid Stations.

The Cascade Cream Puff mountain bike race will begin at the Westridge School, in Westfir. There will be a neutral roll out (slow pace, not racing) led and followed by vehicles from the school to beginning of road 19 (located in Westfir, Oregon at the Red Covered Bridge). Race start time 5:05am. Mountain bike racers will be led out by a lead motor vehicle, as a neutral start (slow start to protect racers from injury), North on road 19. Once it is determined it is safe for the racers/riders the lead motor vehicle will pull away from the race pack and proceed to the intersection of road 19 and road 1910 where the occupants of the vehicle will provide traffic control until all racers/riders have past by the intersection. There will also be a follow vehicle until racers/riders have all past intersection of roads 19 and 1910. Signage will be placed at the intersection of roads 19 and 1910 informing other users of a bicycle event in progress.

Riders will proceed up road 1910 (North) to the intersection of road 1911 (approximately 8 miles) to the location of Aid Station #2. Riders turn Left onto road 1911 (West) and follow the road (approximately ¼ mile) to the intersection with the Alpine Trail (#3450).
Riders turn Left onto Alpine Trail and follow it to the intersection of the Tire Mountain Trail (#3485), (approximately 1 ½ miles).

Riders then turn Right onto the Tire Mountain Trail and follow it (Northwest) until the bottom end of the trail at the intersection with road 5824 (approximately 6 miles). (Road 5824 will be used as an evacuation route in the event of an emergency.)

Riders continue (Northwest) by turning Right onto the Winberry Divide Trail (#3476) located at the intersections of road 5824, and the Tire Mountain Trail. Riders follow the Winberry Divide Trail to its conclusion at the intersection with road 5823 (Another possible evacuation route in the event of an emergency, only accessible by vehicle until approximately 2 miles from the bottom of the road where it intersects with road 5821 secondary to a landslide.) Road 120 located off road 5823 may also be used as an evacuation route in the event of an emergency. Road 120 parallels the Winberry Divide Trail for a good portion of the trail, providing several access points for evacuation.

Riders continue (Northwest) on road 5823 (approximately 100 yards) to the intersection of the Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail (#3559).

Riders then continue (Northwest) onto the Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail (#3559) (for approximately ½ mile) to the intersection of trails #3559 and the relatively new trail (# and name unknown: we call this the Winberry Tie Trail ) The trail travels downhill (North) to the intersection with road 100 (located just above Winberry Creek).

Riders turn Right onto (# unknown) the Winberry Tie Trail and follow it (North) to its conclusion at the intersection with road 100 (approximately 2 ½ miles).

Riders turn Left onto road 100 and follow it to the intersection with road 150 (approximately 1/8 mile). Aid Station #3 will be located at the intersection of roads 100 and 150.

Aid Station #3 is a Control Point. All riders will have a mandatory 1 minute stop, and check in.

Road 100 will be a planned evacuation route off the Winberry Tie Trail. The road parallels the trail for most of its length.

Aid Station #3 will be manned by 3-5 volunteers. This station will have volunteers present from approximately 6:30am until approximately 10:00pm. No plans for overnight volunteers at this time, but it may be a possibility for 3-5 volunteers to stay Saturday night July 11th 2009 at this location. They will practice low impact camping if they do stay the night.

Riders turn Right (Southeast) onto road 150 and follow it to its intersection with road 151 (approximately 7.2 miles).

Riders then turn Left (North) onto road 151 and follow it to its intersection with road 1802 (approximately 2.7 miles).

Riders next turn Right (Northeast) onto road 1802 and follow it to Aid Station #4 aka “Ray Station” (approximately 1.2 miles). Aid Station #4 will have volunteers camping Saturday and Sunday nights, as in years past. They will practice low impact camping. There is a plan to have Ham radio communications set up at this aid station (if volunteer operators are available). A portable generator may be run for short periods of time to charge the batteries used for the Ham radio communications.

Riders continue (East/Southeast), on road 1802, past Aid Station #4 (approximately 5.6 miles) to its intersection with road 141.

Riders turn Left (East/Northeast) onto road 141 and follow it to its intersection with road 140 (approximately 0.7 miles).

Riders turn Right (Northeast) onto road 140 and follow it (approximately 0.7 miles) to its intersection with road 1912 and the Alpine Trail (#3450). Riders continue across road 1912 to the Alpine Trail.

Riders cross road 1912 and continue (Southeast) onto the Alpine Trail (#3450) (for approximately 1.6 miles) to the intersections of roads 1910, 1912, and 1802.

Riders proceed (Southwest) on road 1910 approximately 0.2 miles to its intersection with road 1911 and the location of Aid Station #2.

Aid Station #2 is located at intersections of roads 1910, and 1911. There will be two port-a-potties located at this aid station, beginning no later than Saturday, July 11th and staying thru at least Monday, July 13th 2009. As in past years, some volunteers will be camping Saturday night at this location. They will practice low impact camping. This is not meant to be a camping location for racers and or there supporters. Ham radio communications are also planned for this location (dependent of availability of trained volunteers). A generator may need to be ran for short periods of time to charge the batteries for the Ham radios. There will be pop-up canopies, folding tables, food and water supplied for the racers and volunteers comfort and safety. There may be a contained BBQ at this location, propane gas operated. Road 1912 is meant to be the primary route for supplying this aid station and for emergency evacuation (in the event of an emergency). First Aid personnel will be present at this aid station. There will be volunteers at this location Saturday night thru Sunday night. The plan is to take down the aid station Sunday night at the conclusion of the race. The port-a-potties will be picked up early in the week following the event. I will try to have the port-a-potties picked up on Monday, the 13th of July 2009.

Riders turn Right (West) and continue on road 1911 to the intersection of the Alpine Trail (#3450) (approximately ¼ mile).

This is also a Control Point. All riders must stop to receive an identification mark before continuing. Riders complete a second loop of the above route before continuing on the Alpine Trail.

Riders turn Left (West) onto the Alpine Trail (#3450) and follow it (approximately 8 miles) to it’s intersection with the Westfir Tie Trail (# unknown). Riders will cross over several roads along the way to the intersection with the Westfir Tie Trail: road 683, road 5828, road 013, road 5828 (again), road 580, and road 576.

Riders turn Left (East) onto the Westfir Tie Trail (# unknown) and follow it (approximately 1 mile) to the intersection of road 202.

Riders turn Right (East) onto road 202 and follow it to it’s end at the Westfir Portal (Red Covered Bridge Park). This is the location of Aid Station #1.

Aid Station #1 will have all the amenities of Aid Station #2 plus a fire truck and/or ambulance on site. This Aid Station is located on City of Westfir property.

Riders will then go back (Northeast) on road 202 to the intersection of the North Fork Trail (#3666).

Riders turn Right onto the North Fork Trail (#3666) and follow (approximately 4 miles) it to it’s intersection with road 1910.

Riders continue (North) on road 1910, climbing it (for approximately 5.4 miles) for the second time of the day to intersection of road 683, and the location of Aid Station 2.1 to be set up in afternoon.

Riders turn Left (West) onto road 683 and follow it (approximately 1.5 miles) to its intersection with the Alpine Trail.

Riders now repeat the same route down the Alpine Trail to Westfir. Then one more time down the Westfir Tie Trail to Westfir. Finishing the race/ride at Aid Station #1 located at the Westfir Portal (park at Red Covered Bridge).

They then happily accept their prized finishers hat!

Course cut-off time is 6:00 PM at Aid Station #1. If you have not started your last lap by 6:00 PM you will be pulled from the race.

No nighttime racing. No lights required.

Also for your safety, if it is determined by 1st Aid personnel or Aid Station Captains that you are unsafe to race (risk to your own health or others) you will be stopped from racing. You may be allowed to continue racing at a later time if in their opinion you are safe to continue.

We will transport anyone who is pulled from the race via automobiles if needed via planned evacuation routes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Aid

We plan to have First Aid kits and trained First Aid personnel at each Aid Station throughout all hours of the event.
The plan is to have an ambulance at the finish line for most of the day.
We will call 911 if there is not an ambulance on the scene if a serious accident occurs.
We will have shade canopies and water at all the aid stations to help cool off racers/riders and volunteers, if cooling off is necessary.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evacuation Routes

In addition to roads already listed for evacuation. We plan to use the following main and secondary roads for evacuation:
19, 1910, 1912
5821, 5824, 5823
150
1802, 1824, 18
Additional secondary roads (along the course route) accessing above roads will be used as needed for the safe evacuation of any persons needing emergency assistance.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aid Stations

All Aid Stations will be stocked as well or better than on any previous year of this event.
RIDERS WILL PASS BY AID STATIONS NINE TIMES DURING THE RACE:
Aid Station #2 three times during the race,
Aid Station #3 two times during the race,
Aid Station #4 two times during the race,
Aid Station #1 one time during the race (then finish the race at Aid Station #1!)
Aid Station #2.1 one time during the race. This is the last Aid Station the riders will pass by before finishing the race at Aid Station #1.
RIDERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE PERSONAL DROP BAGS AT ALL AID STATIONS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AID STATION 2.1.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Course Marking

As per last years event I would like to begin marking the course two weeks in advance of the race (with signs explaining the course marking). I will have all course markings off the course within one week after the conclusion of the event. Most course markings will be off the course by the following day of the event. No chalk or paint will be used for course marking. I will use ribbon/tape and arrow markings as I did last year. I love my forests! I don’t want to see them marred.
